Keys to a Greener, Healthier Lawn

Fertilization - Fertilizing your lawn/turf during the growing season builds turf density and keeps weeds from taking over. Key nutrients for established turf are nitrogen and potassium. These two nutrients keep your lawn green, thick, and healthy. Phosphorous is the key nutrient when over seeding. Phosphorous accelerates grass establishment when seeding.

Proper Watering – A lawn should receive approximately one to two inches of water per week during the driest and hottest months. Deep watering to a soil depth of at least five to six inches is recommended. Watering your lawn in the early morning is the ideal time. Mid-day watering when it is hot and dry can waste water due to excessive evaporation. Watering in the evening tends to promote disease problems.

Mowing Tips – To keep your lawn looking at its best remove only 1/3 of the total length of grass each time you mow. Keeping your blades sharp is very important. Dull blades rip and shred the grass instead of cutting it. This will make the grass susceptible to many problems like insects and disease. Determining when to mow the lawn should be based on the growth rate of the grass and not a calendar.

Core Aeration – The point of core aeration is to remove some of the organic material on lawns that develop thatch of one inch or more. Aeration promotes better moisture and air penetration into compacted soils. It also helps establish a deeper and healthier root system and stimulates the microbial activity involved in decomposing the thatch layer.
